A robot arm with a camera that can sort recyclable trash at speed beyond human speed.

Another trash management system that uses centrifugal force to not only remove water but also separate the trash based on density and size.

A “river patrol robot” made with reused plastic bottles and equipped with sensors and cameras to give 24/7 pollution dumping surveillance and constant real-time water quality readings.

A civil engineering contraption that catches high volumes of plastic waste in rivers before they float out to sea.

These were among the eight mind-opening engineering ideas developed recently by undergraduates of UOW Malaysia.

They were presented at the 2nd Engineering Undergraduate Research Symposium in mid-April, hosted by UOW Malaysia’s School of Engineering.

It is a signature event of the school to showcase and demonstrate the

undergraduates’ prowess for innovation and creativity that pivot on providing sustainable solutions.

The event was officiated by Professor Dr Hiew Leang Pang, the Vice-Chancellor and S. Shanker, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration).

About 150 guests from industries, academia and students attended the symposium.

Three keynote sessions were delivered by Ajmain Kasim (CEO – SIRIM Tech Venture Sdn Bhd), Dr Tan Chor Min (Director – TNG Group) and Prof Christian Ritz (Director, SMART Infrastructure Facility, UOW Australia).

Students who worked on the eight innovation projects opened booths to present their ideas, designs and prototypes.

These projects, all of which were focussed on addressing industry problems which necessitate sustainable solutions, were produced within 12 weeks.

The prime focus on the second day was the presentation of Final Year Projects (FYP), which is the central to the school’s commitment to providing research-led teaching for students to develop independent problem-solving and research skills.

Experts with strong reputations in recognized research and industrial practices and who could help with accurate information and professional insights were invited to ascertain the students’ ability of generating intellectual and academic ideas.

Their presence as judges was a testament to their passion for engineering and their dedication to furthering the frontiers of knowledge.

During the symposium, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was inked between UOW Malaysia’s School of Engineering and Galactic Advance Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd and Program Hi-Tech Sdn Bhd.

Galactic Advance Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd CEO N. Saktivel and Dhivagar Naidu, the General Manager of Program Hi- Tech Sdn Bhd represented their organization respectively.

The partnership was mooted in recognition of their generous contributions of monetary funds and access to industry-standard hardware.

These will provide students with valuable opportunities to pursue their design and final year projects, develop their skills, and showcase their innovative and sustainable conceptual framework.

The event concluded with awards presentations under various categories encompassing industry choice awards, sustainable product award, best presentation award, best poster awards as well as best overall project which was jointly sponsored by Program Hi- Tech Sdn Bhd and IEEE RAS (Malaysia Chapter).
