UOW Malaysia (UOWM) has been awarded the 3 Diamond Rating under the SEDA Malaysia Sustainable Energy Low Carbon Buildings Assessment for its GreenPASS Operation initiative. This recognition marks a significant milestone in the university’s sustainability journey, showcasing its unwavering commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy practices.

The GreenPASS Operation, administered by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia, is part of a voluntary initiative designed to assess and certify low-carbon building operations. Using the Common Carbon Metric (CCM) framework, GreenPASS evaluates energy efficiency and carbon reduction efforts across operational boundaries, encouraging the adoption of sustainable practices among building operators. The Diamond Rating, the highest recognition under this assessment, signifies exemplary performance in reducing carbon footprints.

This award highlights UOWM’s outstanding achievement in reducing emissions by an impressive 35.31%, equivalent to a reduction of 1,522.98 tonnes of CO₂ per year or 2,194,502 kWh annually (reporting year 2023). This accomplishment underscores the university’s efforts in implementing sustainable energy solutions, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship, and integrating sustainability into its operations.

The initiative, spearheaded by Ts Dr Nishata Royan, Certified Sustainability (ESG) Practitioner and Senior Lecturer from the School of Engineering, alongside with Mr Jagjeet Singh, Facilities Maintenance & Safety Senior Manager, reflects the university’s dedication to embedding sustainability into its core values. Through their leadership and innovative approaches, UOWM has set a benchmark for low-carbon operations, serving as a model for other institutions to emulate.

The GreenPASS Operation is part of UOWM’s broader commitment to sustainability, aligning with its mission to contribute to a greener future.
