The Department of Built Environment (DOBE) at UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College successfully hosted the Environmental Services Walk 2026 on 7 August at the Batu Kawan campus.
Led by Mr Calvin Choo, Assistant Manager of the Facilities Department, the experiential tour gave 26 students and five staff members a rare behind‑the‑scenes look at the technical infrastructure that sustains an institutional campus.
Participants explored the Air Handling Unit (AHU) — the system that regulates and circulates air — and the main Distribution Box (DB), which controls electrical supply. They also visited the Building Management System (BMS), a centralised computer system that monitors and manages building services such as lighting, ventilation, and fire safety.
The walk continued to rooftop cooling towers, rainwater harvesting systems, pump rooms, and high‑voltage electrical service areas. Students also learned about Uniform Building By‑Laws (UBBL), which set out Malaysia’s legal requirements for fire safety and building standards.
The activity strengthened students’ understanding of sustainable design strategies, fire safety requirements, heating, ventilation and air‑conditioning (HVAC) systems, and energy efficiency, complementing coursework in Building Systems & Structures, Environmental Studies, and Interior Architecture.
The program concluded with a wrap‑up discussion and group photograph, marking a meaningful learning experience that connected classroom knowledge with the realities of building operation and facilities management.
