Yong Jin Ye, a graduate of the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honors (UBME) program at the University of Wollongong Malaysia (UOWM), has been honored with the prestigious Institution of Engineers (IEM) Gold Medal Award 2023 for his exceptional performance as the top final year engineering student. Guided by his supervisor, Ts. Dr. Nishata Royan A/P Rajendran Royan, Yong Jin Ye’s outstanding final year project, titled “Development of a Smart Indoor Vertical Farming System,” demonstrated his expertise in designing an advanced farming system equipped with environmental monitoring and control components.

The project focused on three main aspects: designing a comprehensive system architecture, assessing structural integrity and mechanical efficiency through Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and integrating smart systems to minimise human intervention. Beyond his academic accomplishments, Yong Jin Ye showcased remarkable dedication and passion for the engineering community by actively participating in the IEM Student Chapter and contributing significantly to a decomposing system project.
