Team UOWMaker, comprising five engineering students, proudly represented University of Wollongong Malaysia at the 47th Engineering Development, Motivation and Awareness Training (EDMAT‑47) program, held from 8-10 May 2026 at Universiti Malaya. Competing against 18 local and international teams, our students secured the 1st Runner‑Up position with an innovative healthcare solution that impressed judges and peers alike.

Guided by the theme “Medineer: Build, Innovate, Elevate”, the program challenged participants to apply engineering creativity to healthcare improvement. The UOWMaker team — Choy Kah Chun, Jeffrey Chua Keong Quan, Kelvin Lai Hong Fai, Yeak Li Ying, and Teo Yong Yi — rose to the occasion with remarkable skill, collaboration, and determination.

Hands‑On Learning

Across three days, students engaged in intensive masterclasses covering 3D printing, Arduino‑based electronics prototyping, laser cutting, and pitching & presentation skills. These sessions provided rapid exposure to cutting‑edge tools and techniques, preparing participants for the fast‑paced Makerthon challenge.

The Makerthon Challenge

With less than 48 hours to address the pressing issue of emergency department congestion and patient boarding, Team UOWMaker designed a Smart Hospital Traffic Control System. Their software platform integrated AI‑driven patient assessment, automated prioritisation, dynamic doctor scheduling, and real‑time zone monitoring. Dedicated web interfaces were developed for patients, receptionists, department heads, and doctors — showcasing both technical depth and practical usability.

Recognition and Achievement

The team’s solution advanced them through the preliminary pitching round into the Top 6 finalists, where their confident presentation and strong technical execution earned them the 1st Runner‑Up title. This achievement reflects not only their engineering excellence but also the university’s commitment to nurturing future‑ready graduates equipped to tackle real‑world challenges.
