MasterChef Moment for UOW Malaysia at Australian High Commission Dinner

On 28 August 2025, the Australian High Commissioner’s Residence in Kuala Lumpur was the setting for an exclusive dinner reception focused on celebrating Australian culinary talent and produce. The event, coordinated by Almonds Australia, showcased a refined menu crafted by Malaysian-born Australian chef and former MasterChef Australia runner-up, Yeow Poh Ling.

The Culinary Arts Department of UOW Malaysia was honoured to be a key participant, with the Australian Embassy hoping to build future collaborations with the university’s School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts (SHTCA). The university’s representation included Puan Sharina Puteh, the Head of School for SHTCA, and Chef Hamirudin, who served as an assistant chef under Yeow’s direction.

The event was a special opportunity for UOW Malaysia students Low Qi Man, Chloe Natalie Chong, Chloe Yap Huey Ern, and Joshua Marcus Tan. These four students had the unique chance to work alongside Chef Yeow, helping to prepare and serve the dinner to approximately 50 distinguished guests. The guest list featured notable individuals from the hospitality and diplomatic sectors, including general managers from prominent hotels, representatives from the Australian Trade & Investment Commission, and officials from the Australian High Commission.

The menu, which highlighted Australian almonds and other premium ingredients, provided the students with firsthand experience in an international diplomatic setting. This high-profile event not only allowed students to interact with key industry stakeholders but also demonstrated the professionalism and culinary skills of UOW Malaysia’s students.

This successful partnership between UOW Malaysia and the Australian High Commission is a testament to the value of industry collaborations in providing students with real-world experience. It also lays the groundwork for potential future partnerships with Australian agencies and culinary ambassadors.
