On 30 March, UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College successfully organised Mind Over Matter: Mental Health Awareness Day, attended by 120 participants comprising lecturers, staff, and students from Foundation, Diploma, and Degree programs.
The initiative was organised by students from various departments enrolled in MPU3432N Global Social Responsibility, led by the School of Communication & Languages, which offers and oversees the course. The project reflects a collaborative, student-driven effort to promote mental well-being while encouraging positive thinking across the campus community.
The programme opened with a welcoming address by Ms Heran Niruba, Academic Department Head of the School of Communication and Languages, who highlighted rising stress levels among university students and emphasised the importance of proactive emotional self-care. Her remarks set a reflective and purposeful tone for the day.
A key highlight was an inspiring talk by Ms Ivlynn Yap, Executive Chairman of Citrine One Group of Companies and author of Choices. She shared insights on mental resilience and practical strategies for managing stress, drawing from her personal experiences to underscore the importance of mindful decision-making. In support of student learning, several copies of her book Choices were generously donated to the university library.
Students also contributed actively through an engaging exhibition focusing on mental health and developmental conditions, including eating disorders, autism, and dyslexia. The interactive booths encouraged participants to explore, reflect, and deepen their understanding while fostering empathy and awareness in an accessible and meaningful way.
“It was encouraging to see students openly engaging with mental health topics,” said Ms Shamini, Senior Lecturer from the Department of Languages, noting the initiative’s role in strengthening awareness and encouraging open dialogue on mental well-being.
Ms Nuraisha, Lecturer from the same department, added, “The event allowed the organising students to step out of their comfort zones, engage with the audience and build greater confidence in communication.”
The event left a lasting impact on participants, enhancing understanding of mental health issues and empowering the university community to actively champion well-being on campus.
