Seeing the Unseen: How a Microscopic World Inspired the Next Generation

By UOW Malaysia

UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College recently opened a window into a world rarely seen by the human eye, welcoming more than 400 participants, including students and teachers from 14 secondary schools in Seberang Prai, alongside academics, researchers and industry professionals, to the “Seeing the Unseen: Exploring the World of Electron Microscopy and Surface Beam Analysis Workshop 2026”. Held from 7 to 11 September 2026, the workshop showcased how advanced scientific technologies are transforming the way we understand materials, solve complex challenges and drive innovation.

Organised in collaboration with Hi-Tech Instruments and PowerSains, the workshop brought together education, industry and government representatives to inspire greater interest in STEM and emerging technologies. A highlight of the workshop was the participation of distinguished guests, including YB Lim Guan Eng, Member of Parliament for Bagan and Penang State Assemblyman for Air Putih; YB Senator Dr Lingeshwaran A/L Dato’ Seri R. Arunasalam; Mr KY Tay, Founder and Managing Director of Hi-Tech Instruments; Professor Dr Khong Yun Loong, Founder of PowerSains and Adjunct Professor of UOW Malaysia; and Mr Ahmad Azhar bin Talib of the Penang State Education Department. Their presence underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships between educational institutions, industry and government in advancing science and technology education.

Through presentations, keynote sessions and demonstrations, participants explored the applications of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), surface beam analysis and advanced material characterisation. Industry experts and researchers shared how these technologies are used in fields such as semiconductor manufacturing, materials science, failure analysis and industrial research.

A key feature of the programme was its emphasis on experiential learning. Students gained first-hand exposure to technologies that are shaping the future of science and engineering, while researchers and industry professionals exchanged knowledge and explored opportunities for collaboration in research, training and technology transfer.

Beyond technical knowledge, the workshop demonstrated the value of industry-university collaboration in preparing young people for an increasingly technology-driven future. Participants exchanged ideas, explored emerging applications and discussed opportunities for future collaboration in research, training, technology transfer and industry engagement.

Supported by professional bodies including the Institution of Engineers Malaysia Electronic Engineering Technical Division (IEM eETD), IEEE Penang Joint Chapter and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Malaysia Section, the workshop reflects UOW Malaysia’s commitment to nurturing future-ready talent and fostering innovation through industry-academia partnerships.

As participants left with a deeper appreciation of the microscopic world around them, the message of the workshop was clear: some of the most important discoveries begin when we take the time to look a little closer.
