Students from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) at UOW Malaysia gained valuable industry insights during an engaging Career Talk held on 3 March 2026 at the Batu Kawan Campus.
The session brought together 56 hospitality and culinary arts students and 3 SHTCA staff for an inspiring exchange with leading professionals from some of the world’s most renowned hotel brands. Guest speakers included Ms Ng Shen-ynn, Learning & Development Manager at St Regis Langkawi, Mr Kenneth Samsudin, Learning Manager from Ritz Carlton Langkawi, Mr Muhammad Ikmal Hakim Bin Bukhori, Talent Manager–HR from Aloft Langkawi Pantai Tengah, and Mr Gabriel Jaime Batulay, Learning & Development Manager of Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, and Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La, Penang.
During the talk, the speakers shared insights into the operations, culture and career pathways within their respective properties, offering students a glimpse into the standards and expectations of global luxury hospitality brands. A key highlight of the session was the discussion on internship opportunities, where students learned about training placements, departmental exposure and the professional skills required to thrive in the industry.
The speakers also emphasised the qualities employers look for in interns and graduates, including professionalism, adaptability, teamwork and a strong willingness to learn. Their practical advice encouraged students to approach their internships with initiative and a positive attitude.
The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, giving students the opportunity to connect directly with the industry experts and gain further clarity on career prospects in hospitality.
