With the morning tide rolling in at Pantai Morib, Selangor, a team of 19 spirited UOW Malaysia students and staff joined hands with Reef Check Malaysia and the Kuala Langat Municipal Council for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) 2025, led by Her Highness Tengku Datin Paduka Setia Zatashah Binti Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the daughter of the Sultan of Selangor, and an environmental and social activist.
Now in its 40th year, the International Coastal Cleanup is a global movement that unites volunteers from around the world to take action by removing trash from beaches and oceans, identifying the sources of litter, and inspiring change to combat marine debris pollution.
Guided by Mr Muhammad Naim Arman bin Mohd Ashari and Ms Sammie Lim Sin Ming from the Student & Alumni Centre, together with Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Cheng Xiau San from the School of Engineering, UOW Malaysia participants contributed to this global cause by collecting and categorising waste along the coastline — transforming teamwork into tangible environmental action.
The highlight of the day was the Recycling Waste Collection Competition, which saw UOW Malaysia’s groups proudly securing 3rd and 5th places. In a heartwarming display of unity, when one student won a lucky draw, the prize was shared among all participants — a gesture that perfectly captured the collaborative spirit of the event.
As the program concluded with smiles, group photos, and warm exchanges with Her Highness, participants left not only with bags of rubbish collected but with a renewed commitment to champion environmental sustainability. The International Coastal Cleanup 2025 was more than just a beach cleanup — it was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when communities across the globe unite for a cleaner, healthier planet.
