UOW Malaysia Engineering Students Among Top 5 Teams at TECH Zoomers Challenge

By UOW Malaysia

UOWM KDU Penang University College (Batu Kawan Campus) and University of Wollongong Malaysia (Glenmarie Campus) were proudly represented by 10 engineering students — six from Batu Kawan and four from Glenmarie — at the SEMI TECH Zoomers Bootcamp, held in conjunction with SEMICON Southeast Asia 2026 from 4-7 May 2026.

This prestigious program was a by‑invitation event, with only three private universities in Malaysia selected to participate, including UOW Malaysia. The opportunity allowed our students to collaborate in multinational teams with peers from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Australia, while gaining invaluable exposure to the semiconductor and electronics industry.

Across the first three days, students sharpened their communication, teamwork, and presentation skills through résumé workshops, panel discussions, and industrial visits to Onsemi, a global semiconductor company specialising in intelligent power and sensing technologies, and MIMOS, Malaysia’s leading applied research and development organisation in semiconductor technology and advanced electronics. They then tackled real‑world industry challenges, developing innovative solutions and presenting them to mentors and judges.

On the final day, the highlight came when Loh Jian Kai (Batu Kawan Campus) and Ares Lo Chi Fung (Glenmarie Campus), together with their multinational teams, were named among the Top 5 finalists. Their innovative solutions were presented live on stage at SEMICON Southeast Asia 2026, earning them a Consolation Prize. Beyond the awards, the experience gave students the chance to build friendships across borders, connect with industry mentors, and gain insights into global technology trends.
