UOW Malaysia is no stranger to game development having been a household name in talent development since 2012; the Bachelor of Game Development (Honours) has produced a talent pool of graduates steadily contributing to the games industry in Malaysia. RedGames, the gaming hub of the AirAsia superapp organised its first 48-hour game jam collaboration with UOW Malaysia and jointly supported by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) and SEGA.

Held on July 28th to July 30th, 2023, at the UOW Malaysia Glenmarie campus, the RedGames Jam is a team-based competition where participants formed teams of up to five members to create a game within a limited 48-hour time frame. The event encourages participants to unleash their creativity and develop captivating mobile games using the theme of “Exploration” within the genre of “Hypercasual”.

The event sees a participation of 100 avid developers ranging from professional developers, UOW Malaysia alumni and students of the program. The event launched on Friday evening, had Rudy Khaw, Chief Executive Officer, AirAsia brand co. in attendance saying, “We are excited to host airasia Superapp’s first ever RedGames Jam. This game jam gives a platform to the game development community in Asean to showcase their creative and tech talent whilst providing us with an opportunity to introduce a new original IP through RedGames on AirAsia Superapp.”

The 48-hour timeline saw groups of developers frantically brainstorming and assigning members tasks; the effort was challenging but the rewards up for grabs is one of a kind. The winners of the RedGames Jam will score a 5D4N trip to Tokyo, Japan with invitation to the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2023 by SEGA. This truly is a one of dream for most developers wishing to participate let alone network with many triple A studios in attendance. The passes are strictly for business networking meaning that the winning team will get to the halls before it opens to the public the following day. Perhaps the more important reward would be the RM25,000 development grant provided to the winning team to develop and polish the winning game to be featured in the AirAsia superapp.

The judging will commence on the 9th of August 2023 and the announcement will follow suit.
