UOW Malaysia Students Lead and Triumph at Inaugural Young Digital Summit 2026

By UOW Malaysia

The future of Malaysia’s digital economy looks bright following the successful conclusion of the inaugural Young Digital Summit (YDS) 2026. Held on 25 April at Digital Penang in George Town, the event was a showcase of innovation, leadership, and technical prowess, with UOW Malaysia students at the very heart of the action.

Bridging the Gap Through Innovation

Spearheaded by Co-Founders and Summit Directors Lim Cheng Hong, a final-year Bachelor of Business (Hons) Dual Award student from UOW Malaysia’s Glenmarie Campus and Jillian Yeow En Yu from Universiti Sains Malaysia, the summit was designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world industry demands. The initiative provided a launchpad for 30 upper-secondary and pre-university students from 16 different institutions.

Moving away from passive seminars, the summit utilised an experiential approach, featuring:

  • The Digital Innovation and Rapid Prototyping Masterclass: Workshops on design thinking, problem framing, and business case writing.
  • Vibe Coding: Hands-on sessions where participants used OpenAI Codex for practical digital creation.
  • The “Build ‘N Pitch Challenge”: A high-intensity sprint where students developed and pitched prototype solutions for contemporary Malaysian challenges.

A Proud Moment for UOW Malaysia

The summit’s competitive highlight saw a team comprising Lim Jun Hao, a Year 1 Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering student from UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College, alongside Lee Sze Chet from INTI International College Penang, Avelyn Lim Xing Rui from Penang Chinese Girls’ High School, and Nor Farhanah Bt Abd Rahman from Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Alor Setar, emerge as Champions of YDS 2026 in the Build ‘N Pitch Challenge segment. Their prototype impressed an esteemed panel of judges, comprising of leaders from Exabytes, Penang Science Cluster, and Jabil.

A Strategic Investment in the Future

Supported by Founding Partner Exabytes and Digital Ecosystem Partner Digital Penang, the event also featured a “Founders’ Journey” session with Mr Tan Kah Kheng of D3 Innovation (M) Sdn Bhd to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs.

The Young Digital Summit has successfully set the stage for a long-term youth innovation platform. By empowering young talents with a digital problem-solving mindset, UOW Malaysia students are not just participating in the industry—they are actively shaping it.
