Ever wondered what it’s like to step into an aircraft hangar and see how engineers are trained to keep planes flying? On 30 July 2025, a group of 31 participants — including academic staff and students from the School of Engineering, UOW Malaysia, members of the IEM Student Chapter (UOW Malaysia), and engineers from the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) — had the chance to experience this first-hand during a technical visit to Politeknik Banting Selangor (PBS).
The visit began with a friendly welcome from Ts. Ibrahim Bin Burhan, Director of PBS, who introduced the group to the polytechnic’s training programs through a special presentation. A souvenir exchange between UOW Malaysia, IEM, and PBS management added a formal yet memorable touch to the start of the day.
The highlight of the visit was the guided tour of the Department of Aeronautical Engineering. Students got to explore the aircraft hangar and engine workshops — facilities that are usually only seen by aviation trainees. PBS lecturers explained the teaching methods and equipment used to train future aircraft maintenance professionals, giving students a real sense of how theory is applied in practice.
The programme wrapped up with a lively Q&A session, where students and staff exchanged ideas with PBS lecturers and technical experts. Topics ranged from career opportunities in aviation to the importance of certified training programmes. For many students, it was an eye-opener into the exciting career paths that engineering and aviation can offer.
For UOW Malaysia students, the visit wasn’t just about touring impressive workshops. It was about:
The trip showed how collaborations between universities, professional bodies, and TVET institutions can open doors for students to learn, grow, and prepare for the future.
