On 29 September 2026, 29 students from diverse academic disciplines gathered at UOW Malaysia Penang campus for an engaging industry session titled Financial Management & Cash Flow Management: From Numbers to Business Decisions. The session was delivered by Richard Oon, National Tax Director, Tax Advisory at SWTY Teoh, who drew upon more than 30 years of professional experience to demonstrate how financial literacy supports smarter business decisions and sustainable growth.
Bringing together students from programs including Accountancy, Business, International Hotel Management, Mass Communication and Professional Chef Training, the event highlighted the importance of financial management across industries and professions. Participants were encouraged to think beyond accounting principles and consider how financial information influences strategic and operational decision-making.
Through an interactive case study centred on Jack’s Bicycle Shop, students explored a common business dilemma: how can a company be profitable yet still experience cash flow difficulties? The discussion provided practical insights into the relationship between profitability, liquidity and business sustainability, helping students understand the importance of effective cash flow management.
The session also covered key topics such as budgeting, financial planning, funding requirements and working capital management. By analysing real-world scenarios, students learned how businesses forecast financial needs, improve cash flow and make informed decisions based on financial performance indicators.
One of the most valuable aspects of the event was the opportunity to learn directly from an experienced industry practitioner. Richard Oon’s practical examples and industry insights helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice, making complex financial concepts both accessible and relevant.
The session reflects UOW Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to enriching student learning through industry engagement. By connecting students with experienced professionals and real-world business challenges, the institution continues to equip graduates with the analytical thinking, financial literacy and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive global economy.
