Built Environment Graduating Students Bring Innovation to Exhibition

By UOW Malaysia KDU

While many have been affected by the pandemic, this did not dent the spirit of the graduating students within the UOW Malaysia KDU Department of Built Environment (DOBE). Instead, they were propelled to explore new possibilities and engage in problem-solving to address real problems experienced by our society at this time.

Part of the tradition of DOBE is that every year the graduating students will work together to organize an exhibition to showcase their final year projects. For years, these exhibitions have been a popular event, successfully drawing in hundreds of visitors, including big names from industry, reporters, as well as State Government officials to experience the outcome of these young minds imagining the future of design.

On the 30th of September, the graduating students for Diploma in Interior Design and Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Interior Architecture, presented their exhibition. Not willing to be outdone by the limitation on gatherings during the pandemic, they saw the opportunity to give a different twist to the design exhibition this year. For the first time in DOBE’s history, the students moved the exhibition into the virtual world with the delivery the Department of Built Environment Dark Horse Virtual Exhibition 2020.

With a theme of ‘Human Centered-Design’ for the exhibition, the students brought their aspirations into reality by designing futuristic proposals that centre around the convergence of sustainable living and the exponential growth in technology, innovation and creativity. The ‘Human Centered-Design’ theme of the exhibition seeks to ensure the goal and vision of achieving ‘The UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development’ through bringing balance to our economic, environmental and social needs while allowing prosperity for now and future generations.

Aside from successfully attracting and inspiring close to 12,000 virtual viewers on the future and architecture through this virtual exhibition, DOBE was delighted to receive the support of Chief Minister Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Chow Kun Yeow. Through his video speech, he inspired the graduating students to continue in these creative endeavours.
