In today’s fast‑paced communication landscape, the ability to respond strategically during a crisis is a crucial skill for future public relations professionals. Students from the University of Wollongong Malaysia (UOW Malaysia) demonstrated exceptional crisis communication capabilities by achieving first, second and third place at The Real Tea: Communications Unfiltered Intervarsity Crisis Communication Challenge.
The achievement was accomplished by students from the Public Relations Management class, led by Ms Suzie Yanti binti Muhamad Lagis (Program Leader, Department of Communication and Media Studies), together with students from the Bachelor of Communication (Hons) Public Relations and Bachelor of Communication (Hons) programs.
Organised by Taylor’s University with support from iOli Communications, a public relations and strategic communications agency, the two‑day event featured a forum, an industry‑led workshop and an intervarsity competition. Teams developed and pitched crisis communication strategies within 24 hours, presenting to judges Ms Yan Lim (CEO, iOli Communications), Mr Jafri Amin (World Communications) and Ms Dara Shaipudin (VoxEureka Malaysia).
UOW Malaysia students delivered an exceptional performance throughout the competition, earning all three top positions:
Champion Team Sherllyn Sephrenia Sunny Anak Sherman, Eng Jhun Hao, and Nur Faizan Natun Naffasi Samsuddin (with teammates from Taylor’s University)
Second Place Cynthia Tay Zi Qin
Third Place Rachel Anjali Pereira
This success highlights UOW Malaysia’s commitment to providing industry‑relevant learning experiences that prepare students for careers in communication and public relations. The University congratulates all participating students for their professionalism, creativity and excellence.
