Responsible Engineering: Students Gain Ethical Insight

By UOW Malaysia

On 30 July 2026, students from UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College were inspired to prioritise responsible and secure AI development during a session on “Engineering Trustworthy AI Systems: Reliable LLMs, Generative AI & Agentic Automation” led by Dr Geoff Tan, Chief Technology Officer of All Intelligence Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian company specialising in advanced manufacturing, automation, and quality engineering solutions.

The audience included students from the Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering with Honours, Diploma in Business, and Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering programs, all eager to deepen their understanding of AI’s evolving role in industry.

The talk traced the evolution of AI from prediction to agentic automation, highlighting risks such as hallucinations, bias, and security vulnerabilities. Students explored practical safeguards including Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) and Human‑in‑the‑Loop controls, while case studies challenged them to design solutions for real‑world AI failures.

Part of the Industry Adjunct Speaker Series, the session not only strengthened technical knowledge but also reinforced the importance of ethical responsibility in shaping the future of engineering.
