Senior Lecturer Honoured with Inspirational Indian Youth Icon Award of Penang 2025

Senior Lecturer Andrew Wilfred from the Department of Mass Communication at UOW Malaysia Penang University College has been named the recipient of the Inspirational Indian Youth Icon Award of Penang 2025 in the Community Education category. Organised by the Malaysian Indian Youth Council (MIYC), the award recognises his dedication to academic excellence, youth empowerment, and community impact.

The award ceremony took place on 8 January 2026 and was attended by representatives from industries, corporate companies, and NGOs.

Andrew, who teaches in the BA (Hons) in Public Relations program, is known for integrating community-driven initiatives into his students’ learning. Beyond teaching, he serves as Vice President of the Tamarai Women’s Development Organisation Penang, Head of its Youth Bureau, and is active as a trainer, project director, and short film producer.

He is also the driving force behind Project STARS (Striving to Achieve Respect & Safety), a high-impact initiative educating children on personal safety and rights, recognised nationally and internationally.

“I feel a deep sense of responsibility in receiving this award. It is not merely a personal milestone, but a commitment to continue building a sustainable legacy with UOW Malaysia” Andrew said, emphasising the importance of embedding community engagement within higher education.

The award highlights Andrew Wilfred’s ongoing efforts to champion education, empower youth, and strengthen community development.
