The aroma of creativity and competition filled the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 23 to 26 September 2025, as UOW Malaysia’s School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts (SHTCA) from the Glenmarie Campus made an impressive mark at Food & Hotel Malaysia (FHM) 2025 and Culinaire Malaysia 2025.
Following the earlier outstanding performance by SHTCA Penang at the same event — where the team clinched multiple golds, silvers, and special trophies — the Glenmarie Campus continued UOW Malaysia’s winning momentum with another strong showing. Together, the two campuses demonstrated the School’s growing reputation for culinary excellence, creativity, and industry relevance on the national stage.
Representing UOW Malaysia with pride, SHTCA Glenmarie fielded multiple teams in this World Association of Chefs’ Societies (WACS) international-level competition. Under the guidance of Chef Muhammad Edwan bin Shaharir, Chef Alex Chia Sheng Da, and Ms Nursyuhada binti Mohd Taufik, 10 passionate students competed across challenging categories including Individual Hot Cooking, California Cheese Pizza, US Potatoes Challenge, and Bedmaking.
At the end of the competition, SHTCA Glenmarie celebrated a proud medal haul across several categories:
2 Silver Medals – California Cheese Pizza (Chef Alex Chia Sheng Da) and Heritage Cuisine (Chong Ven Nyee)
4 Bronze Medals – Chef of Nation (Chef Alex Chia Sheng Da, pictured under Silver Medal category), Individual Hot Cooking – Duck (Low Qi Man and Sim Zhi Wei), and Salmon (Joelle Tay Xin-E)
4 Diploma Awards – Aavie Ng Shi Chuan, Ritto Sabu, Kok Yi Mei and Ain Nurhanee Binti Taslim
These achievements were particularly remarkable as most of the award recipients were first-time competitors, making their success a testament to their dedication, skill, and the excellent mentorship of their lecturers.
Meanwhile, another group of 40 selected culinary students gained valuable industry exposure by supporting the event’s major exhibitors such as NKR Oven, Rational Ovens, UNOX, USA Potatoes, and California Dairy. Tasked with assisting in live product demonstrations and booth management, students experienced the high-paced world of MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) firsthand. Their professionalism and enthusiasm impressed industry partners, paving the way for future collaborations.
Beyond medals and recognition, the event was a powerful learning platform — one that blended competition, teamwork, and real-world industry experience.
