STARS: A Beacon of Safety and Respect

By UOW Malaysia

UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College is taking a proactive stance on child safety and respect through its STARS (Striving to Achieve Respect & Safety) campaign. Led by the Department of Mass Communication, this initiative aims to empower young minds with knowledge about personal safety and their rights.

The campaign launched with an exciting event led by Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Chong Beng Keok and Ms Azati Syamini, General Manager of KITA FUND, alongside lecturers, staff and students. The STARS campaign, managed by final-year Public Relations students and spearheaded by Senior Lecturer Mr. Andrew Wilfred, was awarded a RM10,000 grant after winning second place in the Z-Neration competition organised by KITA FUND.

Ms Azati Syamini commended UOW Malaysia KDU Penang for their impactful work and emphasised the importance of collaboration for social good. She highlighted how the STARS campaign aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those protecting children’s rights.

A key component of the STARS campaign is the launch of a child safety activity book. This engaging resource, written and illustrated by the project team, provides young readers with a simple and fun way to learn about important safety concepts.

Mr Andrew Wilfred expressed gratitude to KITA FUND for supporting the initiative, which not only addresses a critical social issue but also provides invaluable experience for Public Relations students. The grant will fund 35 educational workshops targeting kindergarten and primary school students, creating a safe space for open discussions and promoting mutual respect.

“As we embark on this important journey, let’s remember: ‘An informed child is a protected child,’” he concluded. The STARS campaign is poised to illuminate the path toward a safer future for children in Penang!
