Striking Gold and Silver: Culinary Alumni Dominate in Shanghai

By UOW Malaysia

Culinary alumni from the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) at UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College made a remarkable impression at the prestigious HOTELEX Rising Star China International Young Chefs Competition 2025, held from 30 March to 2 April 2025 at the Shanghai National Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Representing Malaysia with pride, Team Malaysia 1 — comprising SHTCA alumnus Ong Thai Zheng and his partner Chun Pak Hao (1st and 2nd from left in photo) — clinched the coveted Gold Medal and emerged as the Overall Champion, triumphing over 12 elite teams from across Asia, including China, Thailand, Singapore and South Korea. Meanwhile, Team Malaysia 2, made up of SHTCA alumni Kho Zhi Juin and Ch’ng Kia Eng (3rd and 4th from left in photo), also brought honour to the nation by securing the Silver Medal.

The event, held as part of the 33rd HOTELEX 2025 Shanghai International Hotel and Catering Industry Expo, attracted 168 competitors and 35 international judges, offering a vibrant platform for aspiring chefs to showcase their culinary talents on the global stage.

SHTCA extends its heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff from SHTCA — Chef Chuah Lay Yen, Chef Sean Lim, and Chef Khor Ying Jia — and to the Penang Chefs Association for their invaluable support and collaboration in preparing the teams.
