A powerful student-made short film is making waves for its raw portrayal of mental health. Sisters in Silence, produced by students from the Department of Mass Communication at UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College, has earned a finalist spot in the Best Local Short Video category at the Malaysian Mental Health Film Festival 2025.
Directed by Renee Cheung Cadiz, a BA (Hons) Media Production student, the film unfolds inside the “Quietest Room in the World,” where sisters Caroline and Rose attempt to break a Guinness World Record. But the silence reveals more than just stillness—it uncovers buried trauma, painful memories, and a psychological unravelling that keeps the audience on edge.
With its gripping storyline, emotional depth, and haunting visuals, Sisters in Silence explores the blurred line between reality and trauma, sparking important conversations about grief, guilt, and mental well-being.
This recognition is a proud moment for UOW Malaysia’s student filmmakers, proving that storytelling can be a powerful tool for advocacy and change.
