UOW Malaysia Achieves Triple Success at ITEX 2025 with Gold, Special Award, and Silver Medal

By UOW Malaysia

UOW Malaysia is proud to announce its outstanding achievements at the 36th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2025), held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 29 – 31 May 2025. The university secured three major international awards, further cementing its position as a leader in sustainability-driven innovation and applied engineering research.

Among the highlights, the GR3EN (Green Rice Eco-Extrusion for NextGen Additive Manufacturing) project was awarded a Gold Medal and the prestigious Special Award for Best Invention in Green Technology from the Japan Intellectual Property Association (JIPA). The project introduced a sustainable 3D printing filament made from rice husk and recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE), enhanced through surface treatment for improved compatibility and printability. This innovation supports circular manufacturing, reduces plastic and agricultural waste, and promotes eco-friendly prototyping in education, design, and rural innovation.

The GR3EN project was led by Ts. Dr Nishata Royan A/P Rajendran Royan, with key contributions from Ts. Nur Hasalli Binti Ibrahim, Mr Daniel Liang Chong Xin, Mr Krisshaan A/L Perbakaran, Mr Muhammad Fadzlee Firas Bin Mohd Fadzillah, and Mr Amaresh Malakar Choudhury.

In addition, the Fuzzy Logic-Controlled Bio-Oil Microreactor with Raspberry Pi for Green Energy Innovation project earned a Silver Medal for its intelligent waste-to-energy system. This innovation converts organic waste into bio-oil, biochar, and syngas using fuzzy logic control and IoT-based monitoring, offering a smart and low-emission solution for urban sustainability challenges. The project was developed by Mr Chua Huang Shen (Project Leader), along with Ms Gee Chia Chen, Ts. Dr Goh Thing Thing, Mr Muhamad Luqmanul Hakim Bin Zairi, and Mr Ho Zhan Qi.

“This international recognition affirms the innovative spirit of our researchers and students and reflects our institutional commitment to solving real-world challenges through sustainable technology,” said Professor Dr Hon Wei Min, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), UOW Malaysia.

These accolades underscore UOW Malaysia’s leadership in green technology, smart systems, and education-driven research excellence. The university extends its heartfelt congratulations to both teams for their contributions to sustainable innovation on a global stage.
