Don’t Stop the Party – Public Playtest – Allowing Industry and fellow students to test the gameplay mechanics.

By Associate Professor Ts. Tan Chin Ike

UOW Malaysia KDU has an enviable reputation for producing game development graduates. This year, students from the Bachelor of Game Development (Hons) program again managed to make it to the finals of the SEA Games Awards, part of the LevelUP KL conference, Southeast Asia’s premier industry event for game developers. This regional event organised by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) will be conducted virtually and is expected to attract more than 50,000 gamers, developers, distributors, and visitors from across 30 countries. The awards aim to recognise and celebrate the creativity, artistry and technical genius of the finest developers and games from around the region in addition to upholding creative and technical excellence in the Southeast Asian video game industry. However, it is not just one student game but two awesome games from the UOW Malaysia KDU game development school that has made it to the top 40 finalists. One of the student games selected for the Top 40 Finalists is ‘Don’t Stop the Party’, a four-player beat-em-up that calls back to the 3D arena brawlers from the late 90s and early 2000s. This unique game was created by Avalon Systems, a group consisting of seven final year game development students. In 2018, another team of students from the Bachelor of Game Development (Hons) program managed to clinch the Best Student Game Award with their impressive looking third-person survival shooter Terminus: Lockdown.
