On 6 July 2024, the University of Wollongong Malaysia (UOWM) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Universitas Islam Sultan Agung, Semarang, Indonesia. The event marks the collaboration between the two universities across various academic and non-academic areas.
During the event, Dr Prem Kaur, Academic Department Head, School of Law of UOWM presented a paper on the “Application of Cyber Notary in the Common Law system”. The role of a notary in countries with the Common Law system, such as Malaysia, UK, and Australia, differs from that in countries with the Civil Law system, such as Indonesia, Netherlands, and Germany.
Indonesia is embracing a new era of notarisation known as Cyber Notary. Issues regarding the ‘people and culture friendliness’ of Cyber Notary were raised during the seminar. Despite having laws in place for its implementation in Indonesia, significant challenges were discussed along with potential ways forward.
