Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have always been at the core of the School of Engineering. The School of Engineering UOW Malaysia, in collaboration with the Pre-University School, organized the STEM Festival 2023 to foster scientific curiosity and develop STEM skills among high school students. Themed “Explore the Unknown – A Space and Science Festival,” the event attracted around 200 STEM enthusiasts from secondary schools, including SMK Tropicana, SMK Damansara Utama, and Greenview International School. Participants engaged in stimulating activities, workshops, and exhibitions.

The event was inaugurated by Professor Dr. Hiew Pang Leang, the Vice-Chancellor, with an exciting drone launch. He emphasized in his speech the significance of STEM literacy in preparing a diverse workforce and the relevance of the school’s initiative in addressing the declining interest in STEM among students.

The event commenced with an informative sharing session by Ts Dr. Mohamad Dzulhelmy Bin Amari from the Ministry of Health Malaysia, provided valuable insights into career opportunities in the medical science field, particularly from an engineering perspective.

The festival received support from government agencies such as the Ministry of Health Malaysia, Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat, the Department of Chemistry Malaysia, the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT), and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Malaysia Chapter. They set up exhibition booths for medical screening, organized interactive games promoting healthy living, shared forensic expertise, and conducted engaging robotics activities.

External collaborators facilitated workshops on 3D technology, coding, and robotics, inspiring ongoing learning experiences. Three winners of these enrichment activities received sponsored medals from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society. The School of Engineering received positive feedback from participating schools, as students gained knowledge and enjoyed the activities.
